So, tell me about this Carrotmob Charleston idea and how it came about...
Carrotmob is a way for anyone to make a real difference with the environment by buying ordinary things in a targeted way. Carrotmob organizes people who care about the environment to use their buying power to negotiate with businesses.
Carrotmob is a network of thousands of organized consumers who buy products in order to reward businesses that are making the most socially responsible decisions. The first campaign took place in San Francisco, CA, as a large-scale, citizen-powered global initiative and has since spread to other cities around the world – arriving in Charleston this April. The idea was suggested to us at Green Drinks Charleston and we spent a few months with it - fine tuning and waiting...
In March 2009, Green Drinks Charleston contacted a dozen or so locally owned corner markets and groceries with a simple idea: think about what sustainability means to your business, your bottom line, and how it can save you money in the long term. The businesses were asked to determine a percentage of their one-day sales that they were willing to reinvest in their business towards energy efficiency - through simple cost-effective retrofits such as insulation, moisture barriers, and LED lighting. The Carrotmob would show up - and the extra revenues would offset the changes.
Simply put, the business that made the greatest commitment would win, and we would mobilize hundreds of Carrotmob consumers to impact the change directly. With past events around the country, people just showed up and bought things that they would normally buy - like sodas, coffee, shampoo, etc. It's a win for the business, the patron, the environment, and the community.
And also, please support local groups such as Lowcountry Local First and Charleston Inspired in their efforts. And if you would like to make a suggestion for a future Carrotmob, share it with us. We appreciate your ongoing support and friendship, Charleston!

San Fran Carrotmob Makes Time Magazine!
Congrats to Brent and the San Francisco-based Carrotmob for their recent mention in Time Magazine. Their concern, Virgance, is doing some wonderful things to blend community and commerce in ways that folks are really responding to. The article is available here for you to read and share with friends and colleagues!
